Lynchburg is situated in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains along the historic James River in central Virginia.

Though the population of the city is considerably smaller, the population of the Lynchburg MSA is over 200,000. Lynchburg is the regional retail and commerce center with major industries in technology and pharmaceuticals.

The city is home to Lynchburg College and is rich in history as a retirement home of Thomas Jefferson and the site of the Battle of Lynchburg.

The Battle of Appomattox Courthouse, that effectively ended the Civil War, was fought just 20 miles from Lynchburg.
