Athens is located just below the foothills of the Blue Ridge mountains 70 miles northeast of Atlanta.

Athens is the home of the University of Georgia, the first chartered state university in the nation. The university provides numerous educational, cultural and sporting events throughout the year.

The city's restored downtown, art and music scene and Victorian and antebellum historic districts define Southern culture.
