Lawrence is located along the banks of the Kaw River in northeastern Kansas and is the home of the University of Kansas and Haskell Indian Nations University.

Lawrence's history as a stop on the Santa Fe and Oregon Trails in the mid-1800's and as an anti-slave state in the Civil War era are chronicled in local museums and buildings that are still in use.
