Florida, the 4th most populous state in the U.S., became a state in 1845. Florida is the southernmost state in the contiguous 48 states.
Most of the state is coastline with the Atlantic to the east and Gulf of Mexico to the south and west.
Large cities include Jacksonville, Miami, St. Petersburg, Tampa, Orlando, Hialeah and Tallahassee, the capital.
Much of Florida's terrain is at or near sea level and the climate is warm to hot and humid. Florida is an economic leader in agriculture, aerospace and tourism. Florida is a low tax state, one of the few states with no state income tax.
